MARii, Petronas Collaborate To Advance Automotive Innovation With AI Technology
KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Automotive Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) has collaborated with Petronas Global Technical Solutions Sdn Bhd (PGTSSB) to revolutionise vehicle maintenance through advanced technology.
PGTSSB serves as Petronas’ project management and technical services commercialisation arm.
In a statement today, MARii said the collaboration centres on deploying Petronas’ Advanced Diagnostic and Prognostic Technology (ADaPT) in the automotive sector through the ADaPTiV initiative.
“This predictive analytics technology, originally developed to optimise asset performance in the energy sector, will now be adapted for the automotive industry,” it said.
MARii explained that ADaPTiV features powerful artificial intelligence(AI)-driven predictive analysis to forecast potential component failures and recommend preventive actions before breakdowns occur.
“Integrated with the Internet of Things (IoT), the system collects real-time data from vehicle components, enabling condition-based maintenance that is both timely and effective.
“Combined with big data analytics, it generates actionable insights to enhance vehicle operational efficiency and support smarter driving behaviour,” it said.
The institute said the initiative addresses the evolving technological demands of the automotive sector while aligning with Malaysia’s national strategic objectives.
“ADaPTiV supports the development of next-generation vehicles and mobility-as-a-service in line with the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030 and the National Automotive Policy (NAP) 2020, reinforcing the nation's commitment to smart mobility and sustainable transportation,” it said.
MARii chief executive officer Azrul Reza Aziz described the partnership as a milestone for both MARii and Malaysia’s future mobility landscape.
“ADaPTiV represents a powerful convergence of MARii's automotive expertise and Petronas' world-class predictive analytics, enabling us to build a more intelligent and reliable vehicle ecosystem.
“This initiative is a direct embodiment of our commitment to fostering local innovation and achieving the ambitious goals outlined in NIMP 2030 and NAP 2020,” he said.
Petronas senior general manager of Group Technical Solutions, Projects, Technology and Health, Safety, Security and Environment, Mazri Mohd Ali, said the collaboration demonstrates Petronas’ commitment to engineering excellence and cross-sector innovation.
“We are excited to work with MARii to bring our ADaPT technology into the automotive sector. We believe ADaPTiV will enhance vehicle reliability, safety and operational efficiency, while reducing costs and promoting sustainable transportation in Malaysia,” he said.
As part of the partnership, MARii and PGTSSB unveiled the first functional prototype of ADaPTiV at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025.
“The prototype was showcased at the MARii Pavilion, where technical experts demonstrated the technology and engaged with attendees,” MARii said.
The institute added that the ADaPTiV is expected to significantly improve vehicle safety through proactive maintenance, extend component lifespan via predictive and condition-based actions, and reduce unexpected downtime, leading to major cost savings for users.
“Beyond the automotive industry, ADaPTiV holds potential for broader applications across multiple sectors by offering predictive maintenance solutions that improve operational efficiency and sustainability,” it said.
Powered by AI, IoT, and big data analytics, ADaPTiV aims to deliver intelligent, real-time predictive maintenance for vehicle components — ultimately improving reliability, enhancing safety, and reducing maintenance costs..
The partnership was formalised with the signing of a memorandum of understanding, witnessed by Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Liew Chin Tong.
