PETRA Encourages Cooperatives To Participate In Solar Farm Development

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 17 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) is encouraging the participation of all parties, including cooperatives, in the development of solar farms and community solar programmes.

This is in line with the government’s commitment to achieving 70 per cent of electricity generation capacity from renewable energy (RE) by 2050 under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), the ministry stated on the Parliament’s website today.

PETRA said capable cooperatives are invited to participate in the sixth round of the large-scale solar (LSS) bidding exercise (LSS-6), which will be implemented in 2026 and is also open to any interested companies.

“The selection of successful bidders will be based on competitive pricing as well as compliance with the prescribed technical and financial requirements,” it said.

PETRA was responding to Senator Datuk Wu Him Ven regarding the government’s plans to enable cooperatives to participate in LSS development and community solar programmes under the Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia (SEDA).

At the community level, PETRA said the government has introduced the Solar Energy Self-Consumption (SELCO) and Community Renewable Energy Aggregation Mechanism (CREAM) programmes, which are designed to expand access to rooftop solar systems, including in residential areas.

“In addition, the government will introduce a new rooftop solar initiative known as the Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme, or Solar ATAP.

“These programmes are expected to spur the development of RE from solar sources, while providing consumers with the option to utilise rooftop space for RE generation,” it said.
