MIGHT Unveils Groundbreaking Mini Sandbox To Advance Malaysia's Low Altitude Economy

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) demonstrated a first-of-its-kind Low Altitude Economy (LAE) Mini Sandbox as part of efforts to advance Malaysia's capabilities in advanced air mobility and unmanned aviation technologies.

The demonstration, held during the Malaysia Low Altitude Economy Conference 2026, brought together government agencies, industry players, academia and international partners to showcase technologies and regulatory frameworks supporting the development of the low altitude economy.

MIGHT said the Mini Sandbox served as a live platform for testing drone technologies, unmanned aircraft systems, unmanned traffic management solutions and advanced air mobility applications through collaboration among regulators, industry, academia and technology partners.

"According to the Malaysia Advanced Air Mobility Report 2026 published by MIGHT, the LAE has the potential to contribute RM50.7 billion to Malaysia's gross domestic product and create 100,000 high-value jobs by 2030,” it said in a statement.

MIGHT president and chief executive officer, Rushdi Abdul Rahim said the successful implementation of the Mini Sandbox demonstrates Malaysia’s capability to move beyond policy discussions towards practical ecosystem deployment.

“The Mini Sandbox reflects the collaborative approach needed to build a sustainable and globally competitive LAE ecosystem.

“It shows how the government, regulators, industry and technology partners can work together in a live operational environment to accelerate technology validation, support investment readiness and strengthen pathways towards commercial deployment,” he said.

Themed ‘Malaysia as ASEAN's Gateway: From Policy to Practice in the Low Altitude Economy,’ the conference is organised by MIGHT and the Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology and Innovation (MRANTI), held in conjunction with the MyAERO Summit 2026.

The three-day event is taking place from June 25 to 27 at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park, Serdang.

During the conference, MIGHT exchanged memoranda of understanding with several organisations to support research, technology development and international cooperation in the sector.

These include collaborations involving the National Aerospace Industry Corporation Malaysia, MRANTI, the Wuhan Municipal People's Government of China, the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre, France's CETIM, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Avitex Solution Sdn Bhd and Zeitgeist Inspira Technologies Sdn Bhd.

The conference also marked the launch of the Perlis Airspace Sandbox, which is expected to support testing activities, research and talent development related to low-altitude aviation technologies.
