Malakoff Leverages Innovation To Strengthen Energy Security, Reduce Carbon Emissions

KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 (Bernama) -- Energy security remains a cornerstone of Malaysia’s transition to a low-carbon future, with innovation playing a critical role in ensuring a reliable and sustainable electricity supply for households, businesses and industries.

As Malaysia’s largest independent power producer (IPP), Malakoff Corporation Bhd plays a pivotal role in maintaining the reliability of the national power system and supporting Malaysia’s evolving energy needs by balancing energy security, affordability and sustainability while delivering the reliable generation capacity needed to power the nation’s growth.

“Demonstrating a rapid acceleration in our transition strategy, Malakoff’s renewable energy (RE) portfolio has expanded more than 26-fold, growing significantly from 29 megawatts (MW) in 2019 to 766 MW to date.

“The portfolio spans large-scale solar projects in Johor, Perak and Sarawak, small hydropower in Kelantan, waste-to-energy in Melaka, and rooftop solar nationwide,” it said in a statement recently.

Malakoff is also reducing its carbon footprint through operational improvements, technological innovation and lower-carbon solutions that enhance efficiency, reliability and sustainability across its generation of fleets and assets.

“As Malaysia advances towards a lower-carbon future, Malakoff is evolving its generation portfolio through a balanced approach that combines RE expansion with the optimisation of existing assets,” it said.

Complementing its RE initiatives, Malakoff is evolving its thermal assets to support the transition without compromising supply stability.

It said the company has secured the development of two new gas-fired power plants with a combined capacity of 2,800 MW in Negeri Sembilan and Perak, while extending the operations of its existing gas-fired power plants; one in Penang, another two in Perak, totalling a capacity of 2,082 MW, until 2029 to 2030; reinforcing its ability to meet Malaysia’s growing electricity demand.

“Regardless of the new assets, the company continues to evaluate biomass co‑firing, a flagship project under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), as a potential alternative renewable fuel, which provides a cleaner and more diversified fuel mix for its plants at the Tanjung Bin Complex in Johor, demonstrating how existing baseload plants can deliver cleaner generation while maintaining dependable capacity,” it said.

According to the company, achieving a lower-carbon energy mix requires careful management of the evolving energy landscape, ensuring that sustainability objectives are advanced without compromising grid stability or supply reliability.

It said financial sustainability is also recognised as vital to energy security.

“Rising capital costs and mismatched financing tenures pose risks of stranded renewable assets if left unaddressed.

“Malakoff emphasises the importance of longer-term financing structures and viable tariffs to ensure projects remain bankable, thereby safeguarding supply reliability while advancing renewable ambitions,” it said.

Beyond its own operations, Malakoff is spearheading the revitalisation of Penjanabebas, an industry association providing a unified voice for energy players.

It said the association is dedicated to strengthening collaboration with government bodies and regulators, enhancing industry competencies, and ensuring Malaysia’s power sector remains resilient amid evolving market dynamics.

Furthermore, Penjanabebas has expressed readiness to explore nuclear energy as part of a diversified fuel mix, reflecting its commitment to supporting the nation’s long-term energy security landscape.

Through these collective efforts, Malakoff not only advances its own portfolio but also plays a pivotal role in shaping Malaysia’s broader energy landscape.

“By aligning sector-wide collaboration with its innovation-driven strategy, the group underscores how corporate initiatives and strategic partnerships are both essential to safeguarding national energy security,” it said.

Looking ahead, Malakoff’s continued investments and proactive leadership signal its determination to play a central role in shaping Malaysia’s energy future.

With energy security at the heart of its mission, the group remains committed to delivering reliable power while accelerating the nation’s transition towards a more sustainable and resilient economy.
