Sabah People's Fish Programme Strengthens Food Security, Supports Fishermen -- SAFMA

LABUAN, July 27 (Bernama) -- The Sabah Fish Marketing Sdn Bhd’s (SAFMA) fish programme continues to play a key role in strengthening the state’s food security, ensuring a steady supply of fresh, quality fish at affordable prices.
Known as the People’s Fish Programme, SAFMA general manager Burhan Japar said the programme was introduced to ensure all segments of society, particularly the low- and middle-income groups have access to quality protein sources without being burdened by the rising cost of living.
He said the programme benefits consumers and boosts local fishermen’s income through the direct purchase of their catch, creating a more efficient and sustainable fisheries supply chain.
"The programme ensures that there is sufficient supply, fresh and safe for consumption, while the economic well-being of fishing communities is strengthened, supporting the development of Sabah's fisheries industry," he told Bernama after participating in the Road to MAHA 2026 Labuan programme at the Labuan International Sea Sports Complex here today.
Burhan said SAFMA's participation in the Road to MAHA event also served as a platform to promote the fish programme. It also showcased its services, seafood-based products as well as opportunities available via a SAFMA Business Partner programme registration.
Visitors were able to obtain information on seafood products, enjoy seafood-based "Menu Rakyat" offerings and participate in various interactive activities organised throughout the exhibition, he said.
Burhan said in line with Sabah's blue economy aspirations to harvest and protect marine and coastal resources, SAFMA will continue to expand the People's Fish Programme through the development of cold storage facilities, block ice supply, value-added seafood products, wider distribution networks, and the implementation of a zero-waste fisheries initiative.
"The People's Fish Programme is not only about providing fish at affordable prices. It is a long-term investment in building a sustainable fisheries ecosystem, improving fishermen's livelihoods and safeguarding food security for the people," he said.
As part of its working visit to Labuan, the SAFMA delegation also visited the Labuan Fish Market and the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority fisheries complex to observe fish marketing operations and the fisheries supply chain in the federal territory.
