LPA Optimistic Megah Port’s Marine Services Will Operate Smoothly, Safely
LABUAN, July 29 (Bernama) -- The Labuan Port Authority (LPA) is optimistic that the marine services implemented by Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd (MPM) within the Labuan Port limits will operate smoothly, safely and efficiently in accordance with international maritime standards.
Its general manager Mizool Amir Mat Drus said the services had long been planned, with emphasis placed on appointing an authorised operator equipped with the necessary experience, expertise and skilled personnel.
He said the marine services were being implemented in accordance with the marine service provisions under the recently signed Operation, Facility and Management Continuation Agreement between MPM and LPA.
“As the port authority, we must always ensure that the appointed operator possesses the dedication, capability and commitment required to provide marine services within the port limits.
“We are optimistic that Megah Port Management will be able to manage these services smoothly for the benefit of port users and industry players,” he said at a press conference after the launch of the Tugboats and Marine Services by Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd at the Dermaga Merdeka Jetty here today
Mizool said LPA and MPM had been working closely to ensure that all marine and maritime-related services at Labuan Port were carried out in accordance with international maritime standards and relevant safety requirements.
He said close coordination between the port authority and the operator was crucial to ensure that vessel movements, towage operations and other marine activities were conducted safely, efficiently and without disruption.
“Our cooperation is aimed at ensuring that all related services operate smoothly and deliver tangible benefits to port users, shipping companies and other industry players operating within the port,” he said.
Mizool said MPM’s acquisition of four tugboats valued at RM23 million demonstrated the operator’s strong commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities under the agreement.
“The investment in these assets clearly reflects Megah Port Management’s full commitment to providing the necessary facilities and operational capabilities to support marine services at Labuan Port,” he said.
He said the tugboats would strengthen the port’s operational capacity, particularly in assisting vessels during berthing and unberthing, navigating within confined waters and responding to maritime emergencies.
Mizool said LPA would continue to work closely with MPM and the relevant enforcement and maritime security agencies to ensure that the services complied with applicable laws, regulations and international standards.
The launch also featured an emergency response demonstration showcasing the tugboats’ firefighting support capabilities in the event of a maritime incident in Labuan waters.
