PETRA Monitors New Interconnection Projects, Including Sarawak-Peninsular Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) is monitoring the implementation of several new interconnection projects, including the Sarawak-Peninsular Malaysia interconnection project with a capacity of up to 1,000MW.
In addition, the ministry is overseeing the second Malaysia-Singapore interconnection project, which is targeted to commence operations by 2029 with a minimum capacity of 1,000MW, as well as the Vietnam-Malaysia-Singapore (VMS) interconnection project with a capacity of up to 2,000MW.
"The successful implementation of Phase 2 of the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP) (100MW) has demonstrated that regional grid integration is highly viable from both commercial and technical perspectives," the ministry said in a written reply to the Dewan Negara, published on the Parliament website.
The ministry was responding to a question from Senator Datuk Ng Keng Heng on the latest assessment of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) energy integration programme and Malaysia's infrastructure readiness.
PETRA said the APG energy integration programme is now considered to be at a highly progressive stage, having moved into the operational phase for implementing multilateral cross-border electricity trading.
It said this phase has been strengthened through the establishment of the policy, regulatory and technical task forces, as well as the submarine power cable working group under the Enhanced MoU on APG, to develop regional work plans and technical standards.
"In line with these developments, Malaysia's grid infrastructure is now at its highest level of readiness to support regional electricity exports and imports. This strategic commitment is reflected in Malaysia's mandate as Chair of the APG Regulatory Task Force and coordinator of the Submarine Power Cable Technical Working Group," it added.
Responding to Ng's second question on the delay in Phase 3 of the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), PETRA said the implementation of the Large Scale Solar (LSS) 5+ programme, launched in March 2025 with a capacity of about 2GW, has been progressing smoothly and according to schedule.
The ministry said the programme is expected to begin operations in 2028. "In addition, PETRA recently launched the LSS 6 programme on July 16, 2026, with a total capacity of 2,650MW and an energy storage system capacity of 1,250MW," it added.
