Tawau Port Acquires Two New Dock Cranes Worth RM70 Million - Hajiji

TAWAU, Aug 2 (Bernama) -- The acquisition of two new quay cranes worth RM70 million for Tawau Port is expected to boost port efficiency and strengthen its role as a key maritime gateway on Sabah’s east coast.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the investment is a strategic step to strengthen the state’s port infrastructure and support Sabah’s long-term economic growth.

He noted that the investment also reflects the state government’s commitment through Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd (SPSB) to modernise critical infrastructure, enhancing efficiency and competitiveness of Sabah’s ports, particularly on the state’s east coast.

“When they become operational, these cranes are expected to improve productivity, operational reliability, and overall cargo-handling efficiency at Tawau Port.

“They will also shorten vessel turnaround times, reduce waiting times, and strengthen the port’s capacity to handle larger ships and increasing cargo volumes,” he said during the launch of the new cranes at Tawau Port today.

Hajiji emphasised that an efficient and resilient port system is crucial to supporting the growth of key sectors, especially export-oriented industries that contribute significantly to the state’s economy.

He said the Tawau Port upgrade is expected to continue fortifying its role as a major maritime gateway on Sabah’s east coast, while enhancing connectivity with domestic and regional markets.

The chief minister also praised SPSB, Suria Capital Holdings Bhd, and all parties involved for their ongoing commitment to enhancing the state’s maritime infrastructure to support its development agenda.

Meanwhile, Suria Capital chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan said the investment reflects the group’s long-term commitment to developing strategic infrastructure.

“The Tawau Port plays a vital role in supporting trade, industry, and regional relations on the east coast of Sabah.

“This RM70 million investment reflects our commitment to equipping the port with the necessary infrastructure and equipment to meet future trade demands, thereby contributing to the economic development of Tawau and the surrounding area,” he said.

Also present at the launch were Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III, who is also the Minister of Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport, Datuk Ewon Benedick; State Secretary Datuk Zainudin Aman, and Sabah Ports Authority chairman Datuk Donald Mojuntin.
