IPI Up 6.5 Pct In June 2026, Continuing Positive Momentum Across All Sectors - DOSM
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- The Industrial Production Index (IPI) rose by 6.5 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) in June 2026, continuing the positive momentum across all sectors, said the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
It said the manufacturing sector continued to drive output growth, recording an expansion of 7.3 per cent and followed by 6.7 per cent increase in the electricity sector compared with 4.8 per cent registered in the prior month.
The mining production grew by 3.1 per cent, moderating significantly from 19.8 per cent in May 2026.
On a month-on-month (m-o-m) basis, DOSM said the IPI increased by 5.5 per cent from 1.4 per cent recorded in May 2026, it said.
“Export-oriented industries remained the key driver of manufacturing production in June 2026, recording a growth of 7.6 per cent.
“This increase was predominantly observed in the manufacture of computer, electronics and optical products which sustained double-digit growth of 14.9 per cent,” it said in a statement today.
Additionally, DOSM said the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products also recorded positive growth of 2.9 per cent.
It said the y-o-y expansion of export-oriented industries mirrored the growth in the country's export of manufactured goods during this month.
On a m-o-m comparison, the export-oriented industries were up by 10.7 per cent compared with 5.7 per cent growth in May 2026, it said.
Meanwhile, the domestic-oriented industries expanded by 6.4 per cent in June 2026 following an increased of 2.0 per cent in May 2026.
“The expansion was mainly supported by the robust momentum in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers; and the manufacture of basic metals which registered an increases of 12.6 per cent and 8.2 per cent respectively,” it said.
Elaborating further, DOSM noted that the mining sector witnessed a moderate growth of 3.1 per cent in June 2026 due to the increase in natural gas output by 7.4 per cent.
It added that crude oil and condensate production decreased 3.3 per cent y-o-y in June 2026, while the generation of electricity went up by 6.7 per cent.
On a m-o-m basis, the electricity index contracted by 2.9 per cent versus 1.8 per cent in May 2026.
