BNM To Review Macro Data Ahead Of MPC Meeting - BNM Governor

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) will review the latest macroeconomic developments ahead of its upcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in two weeks before deciding its appropriate monetary policy stance.

“We will assess whether the current monetary policy stance is consistent with the outlook of inflation and growth,” Governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour said.

“That’s how we will look at it and I cannot answer you right now because it depends on how we do the assessment, the data points that will come in from now until the MPC, whether it changes in terms of our assessment on the outlook, inflation and growth itself,” he said in a press conference after announcing Malaysia’s second quarter 2026 gross domestic product (GDP) today.

He noted that the BNM’s monetary policy decisions are data-dependent, taking into account a broad range of indicators, including domestic demand, external conditions, inflationary pressures and financial market developments.

Abdul Rasheed said the central bank remains committed to ensuring price stability while supporting sustainable economic growth.

The upcoming MPC meeting is scheduled for Sept 3, 2026.

Malaysia’s overnight policy rate is currently at 2.75 per cent, following BNM’s last MPC decision on July 9, 2026.

The central bank has maintained this rate since reducing it from 3 per cent in July 2025.
