Malaysia Affected By Strait Of Hormuz Issue, But Not As Severely As Countries Without Oil & Gas - Johari
IPOH, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has also been affected by the crisis and disruptions to the energy sector related to the dispute over the Strait of Hormuz, however, the impact will not be as severe as in countries that have no oil and gas resources.
Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said that although Malaysia is a net importer of oil, the country’s position as a net exporter of gas helps to balance the chain of impacts from affecting the entire domestic industry.
“The Strait of Hormuz issue is actually more related to the energy sector. When the energy sector is affected, all industries will be affected.
“In terms of oil, we are actually a net importer, but in terms of gas, we are still a net exporter.
“So, we will be affected just as other countries are affected, but not to the same extent as countries that do not have oil and gas,” he told reporters after attending the Invest in Perak Day 2026 programme here, today.
He said this when asked whether Malaysia would also be affected by US President Donald Trump’s announcement, as reported by the media yesterday, that the Strait of Hormuz would be considered a “new US territory.”
