SINGAPORE, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- Singapore has established a new national identity for its chip industry named SG Semiconductor to strengthen its role in the global semiconductor ecosystem.
Minister for Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry) Dr Tan See Leng said SG Semiconductor reflected the republic's coordinated approach to partnering industry and advancing Singapore’s semiconductor sector.
He said the semiconductor industry is a key contributor to Singapore’s economy, and the republic accounts for about one in ten chips and one in five semiconductor equipment for the global market.
"Singapore has created a semiconductor hub through our efforts in partnerships, capabilities and talent.
"We have established a strong foundation for our semiconductor industry, and the next phase will demand an even tighter nexus of industry expertise, scientific depth and talent, alongside commitment from the government," he said in his keynote address at Innovate Together 2026 on Friday.
Jointly developed by Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), SG Semiconductor will raise the global visibility of Singapore’s sector-wide strengths and its offering to the global market.
SG Semiconductor brings together Singapore’s capabilities across research and development (R&D), advanced manufacturing, infrastructure, industry partnerships and talent.
Its work spans seven technology areas -- advanced packaging, silicon photonics, power electronics, radio frequency gallium nitride, piezoelectric micro-electro-mechanical systems (piezoMEMS), flat optics and integrated circuit design.
Singapore is also developing capabilities to address growing needs in artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced computing, high-speed and energy-efficient data communications, electrification, sensing and intelligent systems.
Meanwhile, Tan said Singapore will strategically adopt AI to enable productivity gains and accelerate innovation cycles to ensure its advanced manufacturing sector is globally competitive.
"Beyond AI adoption, sustained research and innovation activities undertaken by our manufacturers, including the semiconductor industry, are critical to keep up with rapid technological shifts in the sector.
"Success will depend on how effectively Singapore brings together sophisticated research capabilities, quality talent, and leading industry partners to strengthen competitiveness across the semiconductor value chain," he added.
