SMR 20 Hits Highest Level Since May 2012, Rubber Market Ends Higher

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 (Bernama) -- The Kuala Lumpur rubber market ended higher on Friday, with Standard Malaysian Rubber 20 (SMR 20) rising 9.5 sen to hit 1,061 sen per kilogramme (kg), its highest level since May 9, 2012, a dealer said.
Prices tracked firmer regional rubber futures, supported by concerns over tightening supply amid weather-related disruptions in major producing countries.
The dealer said persistent heavy rainfall in Thailand and the threat of a stronger El Niño extending into early 2027 have raised supply concerns.
“Heavy rainfall in Thailand may tighten supply. Persistent rain is expected to continue until mid-October, disrupting tapping activities and limiting production in major producing areas.
“Meanwhile, the El Niño may further restrict supply, with the World Meteorological Organization expecting the phenomenon to intensify before peaking in December and potentially continue until February 2027,” she told Bernama.
Gains were, however, partly capped by lower crude oil prices amid easing concerns over Middle East supply disruptions.
Bulk latex increased by two sen to 769 sen per kg at 3 pm.
