TNB, PTP In Strategic Partnership To Power Malaysia's Net-Zero Aspiration
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 (Bernama) -- Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has entered into a strategic partnership with Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), a member of the MMC Group, to support Malaysia’s decarbonisation agenda and enhance sustainability compliance via greater renewable energy adoption under the Green Electricity Tariff (GET) programme.
In a joint statement today, they said the partnership brings together TNB’s access to certified renewable energy and PTP’s strong commitment to decarbonising its operations, demonstrating how existing national infrastructure can support businesses in advancing their sustainability goals and reducing emissions.
“Under the partnership, PTP subscribed to 16,000 blocks of GET, equivalent to 16 GWh of certified green energy per month, for the period from May 2026 to December 2027,” the statement said.
“The subscription makes PTP the largest GET subscriber among Malaysian ports to date and enables the port to transition its electricity supply to 100 per cent renewable energy.”
The GET programme allows TNB customers to power their premises with certified renewable energy. Subscribers pay a normal base tariff plus a tiered green premium, and receive annual Malaysia Renewable Energy Certificates (mREC).
New Benchmark for Sustainable Maritime Operations
Through the GET programme, PTP will receive certificates that correspond to its green energy subscription. This will support its sustainable strategy, which targets a 45 per cent reduction in carbon emissions by 2030, and ultimately achieving net zero by 2050, in line with national target.
PTP’s GET adoption reinforces its position as a sustainable global transshipment hub and sets a new benchmark for renewable energy adoption within Malaysia’s maritime and logistics sector.
The partnership also serves as a guiding model for other energy-intensive infrastructure operators, demonstrating how businesses can leverage certified renewable energy through the existing grid to accelerate their sustainability journey.
TNB chief retail officer Datuk Kamal Arifin A. Rahman presented a symbolic GET subscription certificate to PTP chief executive officer (CEO) Mark Hardiman, witnessed by TNB president/CEO Datuk Seri Shamsul Ahmad.
Shamsul said TNB remains committed to enabling more business to participate in Malaysia’s transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy system by providing access to renewable energy solutions that support both environmental goals and long-term business competitiveness.
“Our partnership serves as a powerful catalyst for the entire maritime and logistics sector to embrace energy transition, especially in supporting Malaysia’s accelerated efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 as aspired in the National Energy Transition Roadmap.
“This commitment demonstrates how Malaysia’s businesses can play a meaningful role in advancing the nation’s energy transition while strengthening the competitiveness of key economic sectors,“ he said.
Mark Hardiman said the subscription is both a contractual agreement and a declaration of PTP’s intent to lead the maritime industry toward a more sustainable future.
“By integrating GET into our operations, we are accelerating our transition to renewable energy and taking a decisive step toward our 2030 carbon reduction targets. This initiative proves that operational excellence and environmental stewardship are not mutually exclusive, but in fact, the dual engines that will drive PTP’s long-term growth and resilience in a changing global landscape.
“The adoption of the GET programme allows PTP to directly support the growth of renewable energy generation in Malaysia, ensuring that its massive terminal operations are powered by cleaner, greener energy sources,” he added.
Advancing Malaysia’s Green Growth
The partnership contributes to Malaysia’s broader efforts to accelerate renewable energy adoption and reduce carbon emissions across the economy, particularly in energy-intensive sectors critical to national trade and economic growth.
As a key economic hub in Johor, PTP’s adoption of GET also supports the state’s broader green economy ambitions and strengthens the role of major infrastructure operators in advancing sustainable growth, while reinforcing TNB’s position as a partner in the decarbonisation of Malaysia’s critical infrastructure.
