Economy Ministry Seeks Industry Input On Malaysia’s Energy Transition
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Economy has called on industry players to submit policy recommendations on energy storage, the hydrogen economy and smart grid deployment to advance Malaysia’s energy transition.
Deputy Minister of Economy Datuk Seri Mohd Shahar Abdullah has called on attendees of the Asia Energy Storage, Hydrogen & Future Grid Summit (EnerGex 2026) to consolidate the summit’s actionable outcomes for submission to the ministry.
He said private-sector insights are vital to refining implementation of the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the 13th Malaysia Plan. “I call upon the organisers and participants to synthesise the primary actionable takeaways from EnerGex 2026, particularly policy recommendations concerning energy storage, hydrogen economy, and smart grid deployment, and formally submit them to the ministry,” he said in his special address at the summit here today.
He said the ministry maintains an open-door policy and welcome feedback on regulatory constraints affecting investments, as well as proposals to accelerate implementation.
“Energy storage, hydrogen and grid intelligence would shape Malaysia’s economic competitiveness over the coming decade, as investors increasingly assessed energy reliability, cost competitiveness and grid carbon intensity. The ministry was committed to providing consistent policy direction, transparent milestones and coordination across ministries to support capital-intensive energy projects with long development periods,” he continued.
Through mechanisms such as the National Energy Transition Facility, he said the government is also working to reduce risks in early-stage ventures and attract institutional and private capital. “The ministry strongly champions blended finance structures, public-private partnerships and active engagement from the financial sector in structuring bankable green infrastructure projects,” he added.
Mohd Shahar also encouraged secure data sharing among utilities, system operators and research institutions to support better planning, renewable energy integration and optimisation of energy storage assets. “Malaysia’s energy transition must create lasting domestic economic value through local manufacturing, system integration, skilled employment and greater participation by small and medium enterprises,” he said.
