Safran's Negeri Sembilan Facility Produces 27 Pct Of Global Carbon Brake Discs

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- Safran Group’s carbon brake disc manufacturing facility in Sendayan, Negeri Sembilan, accounts for 27 per cent of its global production, underscoring the importance of the Malaysian operation within Safran’s global manufacturing network.

Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) chief executive officer Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid said the facility produces carbon brake discs for aircraft built by Airbus, Boeing and ATR.

“A brake disc produced in Sendayan will definitely end up on an aircraft flying anywhere in the world,” he said in his speech at the expansion of Safran Landing Systems Malaysia Sdn Bhd's carbon brake disc manufacturing facility in Sendayan and the opening of its new wheels and brakes maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility today.

He said the new MRO facility complements Safran’s manufacturing operations in Negeri Sembilan, allowing the company to provide manufacturing and aftermarket services within the same ecosystem, close to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

He said aerospace components require MRO several times throughout an aircraft’s working life, allowing Malaysia to retain economic value for decades after the initial sale.

Sikh Shamsul said Malaysia is already the third-largest MRO player in the Asia-Pacific region and was targeting RM55 billion in aerospace revenue by 2030, while increasing its share of the global MRO market from four per cent to five per cent under the Malaysia Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030.

He said the Sendayan facility employs more than 157 highly skilled workers, including materials specialists, process and furnace engineers, and quality professionals who work to European and Malaysian airworthiness standards.

Meanwhile, Malaysia approved RM218.5 billion in investments in the first half (1H) of 2026, including RM51.3 billion for the manufacturing sector and RM4.9 billion for the transport equipment industry, which includes aerospace, he said.

“Negeri Sembilan recorded its highest-ever approved investments of RM17.16 billion in 2025, followed by RM3.75 billion in the 1H of 2026,” he added.

He also highlighted Safran's circular manufacturing model, which uses a two-for-one remanufacturing approach to produce new carbon brakes from used discs, while material that cannot be remanufactured is recycled into tooling.
