Integrated System Planning Vital To Meet Growing Demand For Electricity -- TNB
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) says integrated system planning is becoming increasingly important as demand for electricity from data centres and high-value industries grows.
As electricity demand continues to rise, accelerating renewable energy (RE) adoption must go hand in hand with preparing the wider electricity system to support it, TNB’s chief strategy and ventures officer Ir Dr Mohd Fadzil Mohd Siam said.
He said TNB’s perspective on accelerating Malaysia’s energy transition emphasised the importance of a whole-of-system approach that considers the entire electricity value chain.
Against this backdrop, it is encouraging to note that “Malaysia’s energy transition is moving from ambition to implementation,” he said in a statement containing his viewpoints presented at the recent “The Edge-HSBC Renewable Energy Forum 2026.”
Mohd Fadzil reiterated that with growing demand from data centres and high-value industries, integrated system planning was becoming increasingly important.
“Aligning electricity generation with network development and future customer requirements will help ensure that infrastructure is delivered when needed,” he said.
This would also enable greater RE integration, he said.
He cited how TNB’s RM43 billion approved network capital expenditure under Regulatory Period 4 (2025–2027) provides a foundation for grid modernisation and system readiness.
Continued investment in network capabilities will be important as Malaysia accommodates more RE and evolving electricity demand, he said.
“A responsible transition also requires careful management of existing conventional generation assets,” he said.
Alongside efforts to progressively reduce coal dependence, exploring technologies that could help manage emissions will be important in safeguarding energy security and affordability, said Mohd Fadzil.
As Malaysia advances its National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), he stressed that TNB remains focused on supporting this progress while ensuring the transition continues to meet the country’s long-term energy needs and economic aspirations.
