MIMOS Forges Partnership With Universiti Brunei Darussalam To Advance Deep-Tech Agenda

KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 (Bernama) -- MIMOS International Venture Sdn Bhd (MIVSB) has formalised a strategic partnership with Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) to advance Malaysia’s deep-tech agenda and accelerate regional commercialisation.

In a statement, MIVSB said the partnership marks a significant milestone in Malaysia-Brunei innovation, while reflecting a shared commitment to foster cross-border collaboration and unlock the value of research through structured commercialisation pathways.

“This partnership brings together Malaysia’s experience in technology commercialisation with Brunei’s growing research capabilities, creating opportunities for mutual growth and knowledge exchange,” said MIVSB, which is the commercialisation arm of MIMOS Bhd, the national applied research and development centre under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).

The collaboration is also aligned with Malaysia’s broader innovation agenda under MOSTI, and supports Brunei’s aspirations to translate research excellence into socio-economic impact.

Both parties would explore the development of a cross-border innovation ecosystem, where research, intellectual property, and startups could be nurtured and guided towards market readiness across Malaysia and Brunei, and potentially into wider ASEAN markets.

This alignment enables a seamless transition from early-stage innovation to real-world application, where ideas, intellectual property, and startups are systematically developed into scalable, market-ready solutions.

UBD’s strength in generating interdisciplinary research, particularly in artificial intelligence, digital technologies and deep tech, is complemented by MIVSB’s structured framework in venture building, investment facilitation, and industry integration.

“Importantly, the partnership is envisaged as a platform for shared value creation, supporting talent development, encouraging responsible innovation, and strengthening the region’s collective capability in emerging technologies,” said MIVSB.

Its managing director, Mohamad Azriani Abd Aziz, said it looks forward to supporting the translation of promising research into impactful solutions, while facilitating connections with industry, investors, and broader markets.

“Through this collaboration, we aim to contribute to a more integrated and dynamic regional innovation landscape,” he said.

Meanwhile, UBD assistant vice-chancellor (Industry Engagement and Enterprise Development) Dr Masairol Masri said the collaboration reflects UBD’s strategic shift towards translating research into real-world impact.

“By partnering with MIVSB, we are not only strengthening our industry linkages but also creating a clear pathway for our innovations, startups, and talents to scale beyond Brunei into regional and global markets,” he said.

The partnership is expected to facilitate knowledge exchange, support the development of innovation-driven enterprises, and encourage greater participation from industry stakeholders in both countries.

By fostering closer collaboration, the initiative contributes to broader regional efforts to strengthen innovation ecosystems, enhance economic resilience, and promote sustainable, technology-driven growth.
