Wealth Creation, Asset Ownership Crucial For Malaysia’s Future Prosperity -- Bursa CEO

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s future prosperity must be underpinned by wealth creation and asset ownership, with capital markets playing a key role in strengthening intergenerational financial resilience, said Bursa Malaysia Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Fad’l Mohamed.

Fad’l said financial resilience requires more than education; it also requires action, access, discipline, opportunity, and supportive ecosystems. He said Bursa Malaysia’s role as part of the financial ecosystem should therefore go beyond producing financially informed Malaysians to producing financially empowered Malaysians.

“For Bursa Malaysia, this is not peripheral to our role as an exchange. Our mission is to connect capital with opportunity.  We also see our role as helping to connect Malaysians with financial security and long-term prosperity.

“A strong capital market ultimately depends on people having the confidence, knowledge and financial capacity to participate in it. This is also aligned with the inclusion pillar under the Capital Market Masterplan 2026-2030 that aims to empower Malaysians to build wealth,” he said in his keynote address at the CGS International Securities Malaysia ESG and Sustainability Conference 2026 here today.

He noted that over the past decade, awareness of budgeting, saving, investing and financial planning has improved considerably, while the digitalisation of financial services has also expanded access. “E-wallets, digital banking, robo-advisory platforms and online investment channels have brought financial products closer to Malaysians. These trends, however, might not have sufficiently translated into greater financial resilience,” he added.

Fad’l said Bank Negara Malaysia’s Financial Capability and Inclusion Demand Side Survey 2024 indicated that while financial knowledge has improved, financial behaviour and attitudes have not advanced at the same pace.
