Labuan Waterfront To Unlock Potential, Drive Island’s Future Growth
LABUAN, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- Labuan Corporation is seeking the proposed Labuan waterfront development to be included as a key agenda under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to unlock the duty-free island’s untapped potential.
The proposed development is also expected to drive future economic growth and strengthen Labuan’s position as a tourism and business destination.
Labuan Corporation chief executive officer Rithuan Ismail led a delegation from the corporation to meet with officials at the Economy Ministry, the Prime Minister’s Department and the Federal Territories Department to brief them on the need to realise the proposed project today.
He told Bernama that the proposed Labuan waterfront development covers two strategic locations — the area stretching from Lestari Niaga to the former market site, and the Nagalang coastal area.
Rithuan said the project is not just a conventional waterfront development but is envisioned as a high-impact catalyst to complement other major development projects on the island.
“The development is expected to transform Labuan’s tourism landscape by creating new attractions while generating fresh economic opportunities and spillover benefits for the local community and business sector,” he said.
Efforts to secure support and provide relevant ministries and agencies with a clear understanding of the project’s requirements are crucial to ensuring that the proposal becomes a reality, he said.
