SIRIM QAS To Strengthen Sarawak’s Carbon Management Efforts

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 (Bernama)-- SIRIM Bhd's subsidiary, SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd is poised to support Sarawak’s drive towards net zero carbon emissions by 2050, following its registration as an Accredited External Auditor Firm with the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak.

In a statement today, SIRIM said the registration authorises SIRIM QAS International to verify Carbon Emission Reports under the Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Emission) Ordinance, 2023 [Cap. 85] for submission to the Controller.

It said the milestone further strengthens SIRIM QAS International’s capabilities in sustainability and carbon management, enabling the company to support businesses and industries in Sarawak as they adapt to the new regulatory framework.

SIRIM said that the verification of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is a fundamental requirement under the Ordinance.

"This registration enables SIRIM QAS International to provide independent assurance needed for credible reporting.

"With its technical expertise and established track record in certification services, SIRIM QAS International is well positioned to assist organisations in meeting their regulatory and sustainability obligations," it said.

According to SIRIM, the registration also aligns with Sarawak's status as the first state in Malaysia to introduce dedicated climate change legislation, towards its target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

As an accredited verifier, it said SIRIM QAS International can contribute directly to these efforts by ensuring that GHG emissions are accurately measured and transparently reported.

Its president and group chief executive officer, Nik Sazali Nik Hussin said SIRIM is looking forward to assisting clients in demonstrating their progress in GHG management.

"We see this as a meaningful opportunity to contribute to Malaysia's journey towards a low-carbon economy," he said.
