EV Charging Technology Transfer Must Suit Local Needs – LINCHR
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- Chinese smart charging solutions for new electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining a foothold in Malaysia as the country’s EV market is expected to accelerate over the next three to five years.
Xi'an LINCHR New Energy Technology Co Ltd (LINCHR) chairman, Yuan Qingmin said EVs and charging infrastructure are closely linked, with delays in one likely to constrain the growth of the other.
"China is among the early adopters of EVs and charging infrastructure. However, technology transfer is not about simply replicating China’s experience, but adapting it to Malaysia’s local conditions through localisation and research and development," he added.
LINCHR is participating in the Global Automotive and Technology Expo (GATE 2026), held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) from Aug 26-28.
The company is also working with local EV charger manufacturer, Swift Bridge Technologies Sdn Bhd, to develop charging infrastructure in Malaysia.
The collaboration encompasses charging infrastructure standards, products, technology and engineering design.
Speaking to Bernama, Yuan said GATE 2026 provided LINCHR with an opportunity to engage with government agencies, energy companies, operators and industry players involved in Malaysia’s charging infrastructure sector.
He said LINCHR’s testing technology solutions command more than 70 per cent of China’s market share, adding that overseas expansion requires technology transfer to local partners and local research and development (R&D) partners.
He said replicating Chinese technology without adapting it to local conditions might meet basic requirements, but may not be suitable for the Malaysian market.
As an example, he said LINCHR had adopted an oil-immersed insulation design for the printed circuit boards (PCBs) of its charging stations to improve resistance to salt spray corrosion in Malaysia’s hot and humid climate.
On standards and testing, Yuan said LINCHR, Swift Bridge and the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) have signed a tripartite cooperation agreement in March last year.
"Since then, we have worked together on charging infrastructure testing and certification standards, as well as upgrading equipment testing laboratories," he said.
Looking ahead, he said charging technology would need to evolve as EVs become more connected and intelligent.
EVs could eventually be charged at home, at workplaces or while idle, with surplus electricity fed back into the grid.
This could turn EVs from electricity consumers into “mobile energy” sources that interact with the grid, he added.
