Budget 2027 Should Incentivise Energy Efficiency, RE Development – Energy Commission
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 (Bernama) -- Budget 2027 should introduce incentives to encourage investment in energy efficiency and renewable energy (RE) development, according to the Energy Commission (ST).
Its chief executive officer Siti Safinah Salleh said energy-efficiency investment needed greater encouragement, as it was often overlooked despite its importance to the overall energy system.
“I hope the government will include initiatives, incentives or measures in Budget 2027 to encourage energy efficiency.
“Typically, most people avoid investing in energy efficiency because they think it is not so exciting. Therefore, I think energy efficiency really needs to be incentivised,” she told reporters on the sidelines of Energy Regulatory Insights (ERI) 2026 here today.
Siti Safinah said the government could also consider incentives to accelerate RE development.
She said those with the financial capacity should be encouraged to invest in their own RE facilities, as such investments would benefit the overall electricity system.
“These are the kinds of incentives that the government could look into,” she added.
Budget 2027 is scheduled to be tabled in Parliament on Oct 9, 2026.
