New Delhi Tightens Security, Traffic Protocols For BRICS Leaders

NEW DELHI, Sept 10 (Bernama) -- With key global leaders set to converge here for the 18th BRICS Summit this weekend, the Indian capital is beefing up security and tightening movement protocols, including traffic diversions along key routes to ensure seamless movement of leaders and officials.
According to reports, about 25,000 security personnel, including traffic police, paramilitary forces and the National Security Guard (NSG), have been deployed for surveillance and smooth movement along key routes, especially around Bharat Mandapam, the exhibition and convention centre where the summit will take place.
Hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the summit carries the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”, with a focus on strengthening resilience, economic cooperation as well as trade and investment reforms.
In addition, the leaders will exchange views on strengthening intra-BRICS cooperation on common priorities and share perspectives on global and regional matters of mutual importance.
The summit will bring together leaders of BRICS member and partner countries, as well as outreach invitees.
Among the key BRICS member country leaders expected at the summit are Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
From partner countries, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Thailand Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed are also expected to attend.
Under India’s chairship this year, over 350 meetings and high-level engagements have been held in over 25 cities across India to further strengthen the BRICS strategic partnership across three fundamental pillars, namely political and security, economic and financial, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
The BRICS group, serving as a political and diplomatic coordination forum for countries of the Global South and a platform for collaboration across diverse sectors, was initially established by Brazil, Russia, India and China.
It later expanded with the inclusion of South Africa in 2011, followed by Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2023, and Indonesia in 2024.
Malaysia, as well as Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Nigeria, Thailand, Vietnam, Uganda and Uzbekistan, were accepted as BRICS partner countries.
As a founding member of BRICS, India has previously held its chairship three times in 2012, 2016 and 2021. India assumed its fourth BRICS chairship on Jan 1, 2026.
This year, 2026, also marks a significant milestone as BRICS reaches twenty years since it was formalised.
