AM Green To Supply Green Ammonia To Japan’s JERA

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- AM Green Ammonia (India) Private Limited (AM Green), a global supplier of renewable ammonia, has signed a binding heads of agreement to supply Japanese power company JERA Co Inc (JERA) with about 70,000 tonnes of green ammonia, produced using renewable energy, annually for five years, with an option to extend.

The ammonia will be produced at AM Green’s facility in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, due to be commissioned by 2028/29 and supplied through facilities being developed next to JERA’s Hekinan Thermal Power Station in Aichi Prefecture, the company said in a statement.

“This agreement reflects the growing demand for competitively priced green molecules from India and reinforces the strategic role of our Kakinada project in supporting Japan’s and the maritime industry’s decarbonisation ambitions,” said AM Green Group President and Joint Managing Director, Mahesh Kolli.

Meanwhile, JERA Senior Managing Executive Officer and JERA Global Energy Solutions Chief Executive Officer, Irtiza Sayyed said the agreement was an important step in advancing a practical end-to-end lower-carbon value chain for Japan, anchored by its power generation business and serving a broader range of industries.

The ammonia will primarily go to a planned joint venture between Japanese shipping lines Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, which plans to use a bunkering vessel to refuel ammonia-powered car carriers. The company describe it as one of the first large-scale green ammonia bunkering initiatives in the world.

The Kakinada plant will run on round-the-clock renewable energy backed by pumped-hydro storage and use alkaline electrolysis to produce the ammonia.

The deal is one of AM Green’s first delivered-basis supply contracts in Asia and extends JERA’s use of ammonia beyond power generation to maritime fuel.
