Tencent Cloud Commits To Investing In Malaysia Over Next Three Years

From Harizah Hanim Mohamed

SHENZHEN, Oct 29 (Bernama) -- Tencent Cloud is committed to investing in Malaysia over the next three years, building on its existing cloud region infrastructure, said Nucky Fang, general manager of Tencent Cloud International and Tencent Cloud Malaysia.

Fang emphasised that the market can expect more Tencent applications (apps) to emerge and grow as the company builds on its current cloud region infrastructure.

“We will continue to invest in Malaysia. What is certain is that we will make constant and continuous investments in Malaysia,” he affirmed, without disclosing any investment figures.

He was speaking at a Southeast Asia media group interview focusing on Tencent Cloud’s expanding artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and local partnerships to support Southeast Asia’s digital economy aspirations.

The interview was held in conjunction with the Global Digital Ecosystem Summit in Shenzhen, China.

Asked about the response to Tencent Cloud’s first cloud region in Malaysia, he said the company has served various sectors following its launch.

“We are not just targeting SMEs and startups, which are showing growing demand for the public cloud.

“We are also working with industries that are strong suits of our Tencent ecosystem, including banking and financial services, such as payments and e-wallets. We are working with large-scale enterprises as well.”

Tencent Cloud, launched in August this year, has established its first cloud region in Malaysia, comprising up to three availability zones in Johor, as it strengthens its cloud and AI infrastructure to support enterprises in the country.

The cloud region in Malaysia will form part of Tencent Cloud International’s global infrastructure network, which currently spans 66 availability zones across 23 regions.

“We also provide Tencent’s AI-generated content (AIGC) product, which is capable of generating videos and pictures and has been used by many small and medium-sized customers in Malaysia,” he said.

Fang said the video and image generation platform is gaining traction in the local market, offering opportunities for companies and production studios to produce dramas, trailers and advertisements.

Asked whether Malaysia is still at the deployment or pilot stage of AI adoption, Fang said Malaysia, alongside other markets, including China, is still in the exploration phase.

“All of us are exploring how we can turn uncertainty into certainty. The biggest example is improving efficiency by working with many companies in Asia to see how we can improve employees’ efficiency in the office.

“We provide technical or business processing support to help customers better integrate AI into their actual businesses,” he said.

He said Tencent’s role as a service provider involves a process of mutual exploration and communication with customers.

“We are exploring with local partners how technology and businesses can be integrated with AI to improve efficiency.

“So we have already moved beyond being purely a service provider to becoming a mutual contributor,” he added.
