By Fatin Umairah Abdul Hamid

PETALING JAYA, Nov 5 (Bernama) – With digital scams posing an increasing threat to online users, CelcomDigi Bhd has flagged 260 million suspected scam calls and blocked 22 million short message service (SMS) messages monthly to strengthen customer protection.

The efforts form part of the telecommunications company's five-year environmental, social and governance (ESG) roadmap, which has reached more than 20 million customers annually through initiatives focusing on digital safety, public education and building a more inclusive digital society.

CelcomDigi head of sustainability Philip Ling said the roadmap, launched in 2024, had also made progress in strengthening responsible business practices, including supplier development, artificial intelligence (AI) governance and environmental sustainability.

Speaking to Bernama on the sidelines of the company's Responsible Business Day 2026 forum here today, he said CelcomDigi had achieved its annual target of providing 20,000 hours of training to up to 600 suppliers across its supply chain.

On public awareness, Ling said the company's Online Safety IRL 2.0 initiative had recorded 22.3 million views and a cumulative reach of 18.3 million, complementing its efforts to protect customers against digital threats.

He said the company was also strengthening its governance practices through the introduction of an AI governance framework this year, as responsible technology adoption became increasingly important in the digital age.

"Another key focus is climate change and the environment. Last year, we reduced our carbon emissions by 3.5 per cent," he said.

Ling said the company's carbon intensity, measured based on data consumption per terabyte, had also declined by 30 per cent over the past two years.

Looking ahead, he said CelcomDigi would continue working towards its 2035 climate targets, which are aligned with science-based targets, as well as its longer-term net-zero ambition.

He said the company monitored its sustainability progress annually and obtained external assurance to ensure the accuracy and reliability of its sustainability data.

Themed "Responsibility in the Age of AI", the forum marked the second year of CelcomDigi's five-year ESG strategy, which aims to strengthen sustainability efforts, promote responsible business practices and build trust in an increasingly connected society.
