Malaysia Airlines Confirms Flight MH89 Cancelled After Technical Issue, All Onboard Safe

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airlines today confirmed that flight MH89, bound for Kuala Lumpur from Tokyo Narita International Airport, discontinued takeoff this morning following a technical issue involving one of its engines.

The national carrier said all passengers and crew on board the flight are safe.

“The flight was subsequently cancelled and the aircraft is undergoing a thorough technical inspection,” it told Bernama in a statement today.

Malaysia Airlines said all affected passengers are being assisted with their onward travel arrangements and will be accommodated on the next available flights.

“Meals, lounge access and hotel accommodation are also being provided where applicable, while alternative travel arrangements are being made for affected passengers,” it said.

The airline apologised for the inconvenience and disruption caused while expressing appreciation for passengers’ patience and understanding.

“Safety and well-being of passengers and crew remain the airline’s highest priority,” it said.

It was reported that black smoke was seen from the plane as it was moving onto one of the airport's runways at around 10.40 am local time in Tokyo.
