MRT Corp, TNB Forge Partnership To Advance Sustainable Rail Infrastructure, Energy Solutions
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) have forged a strategic partnership to advance sustainable energy solutions and the development of more energy-efficient rail infrastructure.
Formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU), the collaboration builds on the organisations’ existing working relationship across the MRT1, MRT2, Penang Mutiara Line and Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link projects.
The collaboration will begin with the RTS Link, specifically the Bukit Chagar Integrated Immigration, Customs and Quarantine (ICQ) Complex and Wadi Hana Depot, where both parties will explore opportunities to introduce renewable energy solutions, MRT Corp and TNB said in a joint statement released here today.
The MoU was exchanged between MRT Corp chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim and TNB president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Ir Ts Shamsul Ahmad, and witnessed by Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook.
The MoU establishes three areas of collaboration, beginning with solar energy solutions, where both parties will explore opportunities to develop and deploy renewable energy systems at suitable premises and assets, said the parties.
This will include assessing energy-saving initiatives to reduce electricity consumption and operating costs, supporting more efficient and environmentally sustainable infrastructure operations.
The second area focuses on electric vehicle (EV) charging and green mobility, including the potential introduction of EV charging facilities at selected MRT Corp premises.
Among others, the parties will explore how charging infrastructure could complement public transport facilities and support the wider adoption of more sustainable mobility options.
The third area covers electrical reliability and maintenance services, with both organisations exploring opportunities to enhance the safety, reliability and operational resilience of electrical systems and generator sets supporting critical rail facilities.
The collaboration complements TNB’s ongoing efforts to advance Malaysia’s energy transition in line with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), particularly through grid modernisation, renewable energy integration and more efficient energy solutions, the statement said.
“By exploring practical applications within the rail sector, the partnership can contribute to the nation’s broader aspirations for a more sustainable and low-carbon energy future,” it added.
